What to Expect in the Showcase

In this course showcase, Prof. Hamza will demonstrate the effective use of digital teaching and learning tools in a communicative, flipped classroom model, structured around a ‘before, during, after’ format. She will showcase the successful integration of Bruin Learn features such as discussion forums, assignments, quizzes, and other design tools, emphasizing their positive impact on student engagement and learning outcomes. The presentation will also address teaching and learning challenges encountered in this approach, outline implemented solutions, and encourage collaborative reflection on further improvements.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Abeer Hamza is a continuing lecturer for the UCLA Near Eastern Languages and Cultures department. She teaches Modern Standard Arabic, Spoken Egyptian Arabic, and Readings in Modern Standard Arabic, which is a course she has also developed. Abeer has recently earned two grants to develop a series of online/synchronous intermediate and advanced Arabic classes, which are now being offered across UC campuses starting fall 2023. Previously, she had developed complementary materials and activities for the Arabic classes and created spoken Egyptian Arabic web-program modules, supported by UCLA CNES. She oversees the Arabic placement exams and conducts oral proficiency interviews. Her research interests include language pedagogy, assessment, comparative Spanish & Arabic literature, and exploring innovative online teaching and learning methods.
