Instructional Design Showcase – Prof. Collette

May 19, 2022 @ 11:00 am 12:00 pm

As a joint effort between the UCLA LMS Transformation project team and UCLA Online Teaching and Learning (OTL), we are taking an opportunity to showcase:

  1. sharing types of course design in the LMS platform, Bruin Learn and addressing pedagogical approaches and strategies,
  2. highlighting features of Bruin Learn to enhance teaching and learning in various courses and disciplines, and
  3. appreciating the faculty’s teaching and design efforts in the new platform

Prof Collett CourseWith a large-enrollment course, SOC 1 integrated various course design solutions to provide students with different types of interactions with course materials, lectures, and chances to communicate with peers. It also prepared formative and summative assessment activities using additional features in Bruin Learn.

  • Build knowledge checkpoints into lecture videos to allow students to interact with lecture content
  • Invite guest lecturers to augment students’ experience with specific topics and introduce them to the work being done by sociologists at UCLA
  • Use Rubrics to track discussion participation
  • Use Group Set to manage large class discussion
  • It might be helpful to see how this class manages a very large enrollment.

Jessica L. Collett is a Professor and Vice Chair of Undergraduate Education in the Sociology department and an award-winning teacher. She has been teaching Introductory Sociology online since summer 2020.
